The Pirates have signed electrifying wide receiver Laquvionte Gonzalez for the upcoming 2021 season. Gonzalez lands with the Pirates after numerous career twists and turns. Undrafted in 2018, Gonzalez signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams. While the Rams were initially attracted to the speedy Gonzalez, he was released in July, just three months after signing. At 5’10” and 185 pounds, Gonzalez will provide the Pirates offense with a quick-fire, versatile weapon either on the ground or through the air.
Gonzalez transferred from Kansas to Southeastern University between his junior and senior seasons. Adjusting to his new home proved to be no problem for the super-talented Gonzalez. He caught 60 passes for 1,018 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season, all program records. Gonzalez joined the Fire for its second game of ‘17, catching 8 passes for 133 yards and a score. The team finished with an 8-2 record and played in its first NAIA Championship Series playoff game ever, thanks in part to Gonzalez who was named an AFCA NAIA All-American.
As a junior in 2016 Gonzalez played for the Kansas Jayhawks. He saw action in 12 games, starting in 11 as a receiver, kickoff, and punt returner. On the season Gonzalez caught 62 passes for 729 yards. He returned 28 kickoffs for a total of 601 yards and 1 touchdown. Season highlights include 8 catches for 131 yards against TCU, 6 kickoff returns for 201 yards and a score against Ohio, and a 95-yard touchdown catch, third-longest in school history, against Kansas State. Gonzalez was a coaches All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection.
Gonzalez sat out the entire 2015 season but, as a sophomore at Texas A & M in 2014, he saw action in 9 games. He grabbed 5 receptions for 77 yards, returned 3 kickoffs for 63 yards, and fielded 2 punts for 32 yards. As a true freshman in 2013, Gonzalez caught 21 passes from Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for 240 yards. He also returned 8 kickoffs and averaged better than 20 yards per return. Gonzalez gained 391 all-purpose yards that season. He is entering his age-27 season with Massachusetts.
