Rui joins the Mass Pirates for the first time this upcoming 2021 season. The former Kansas Jayhawk spent two productive years in Lawrence as their kicker. As a redshirt junior in 2017, Rui earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors. He went 17-20 on his field goal attempts, good for a 85% conversion rate. His long field goal made in 2017 was 50 yards, he also converted 5-6 from 40-49 yard range.

After an impressive 2017, Rui earned Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team in 2018 as a Senior. Right out the gate, Rui showed off his big leg in the season opener that year with a career-long 54 yard field goal vs Nicholls. Rui finished the 2018 season going 12-17 on his field goal attempts. After two seasons as the Jayhawks kicker, Rui finished with a career 78.4 FG%, good for the school’s best conversion clip in history. Most impressively, Rui never missed a PAT, he went a perfect 51-51 on his attempts. 

Prior to kicking for Kansas, Rui spent his freshman and sophomore years in junior college (JUCO) at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. His best season came in 2015 as sophomore, converting 19-21 of his field goals. Including a game-winning 47-yarder and a long of 51 yards. Rui earned first team all-conference in 2015, helping make the jump to kicking at Kansas.

Rui hails from Oklahoma where he played his high school football at Hilton HS. Most recently Rui was invited to rookie minicamp in 2019 from the Kansas City Chiefs. Along with a big-time leg, Rui is a well-respected locker room presence and a vibrant personality. Look for Rui to be an important part of the Pirates special teams unit in the 2021 season.
