Today, representatives from the National Arena League and Champions Indoor Football announced that they will partner beginning with the 2020 season. The two leagues would compete together under a new name, but the Massachusetts Pirates won’t be among them. Pirates founder, owner, president and general manager Jawad Yatim opposes the merger and is exploring other options for the upcoming season. While Yatim is thankful to the NAL for the opportunity to establish his franchise, he feels becoming a part of this new league is not for the Pirates.
Yatim said, “We would like to thank the NAL for the past two years as it was a joy to work with the hard working partners who go about this business in the correct fashion. In saying this however, we have decided we are not taking part in the NAL-CIF merger. As much as we respect our partners, there is a disparity in opinions of how the league should move forward. I don’t feel it is in the best interest of the Massachusetts Pirates and our fans to choose to participate in the NAL-CIF, and we are exploring alternate options for 2020 and beyond. We wish our fellow NAL partners the absolute best and continued success.”
The Massachusetts Pirates arrived on the scene in 2018 and as an expansion franchise compiled the best record in the National Arena League. In 2019, after a slow start, they again finished as a top tier team. The Pirates ended the regular season just one game behind Carolina with the third best record. Only a disputed call in the final seconds on the road in a playoff game against the Cobras kept Massachusetts from playing for an NAL title.
Through two seasons the Pirates have amassed 19 regular season victories which is tied for second most in the NAL over that span. The Pirates appeared in playoff games each year.
Pirates season tickets for the 2020 season are now available starting at $99.00.
