The Massachusetts Pirates have signed offensive lineman Kendall Calhoun for the 2020 season. After starting his collegiate career at Kentucky State and Lackawanna Community College, Calhoun (6’-7” 315 lbs.) played his final two seasons at the University of Cincinnati from 2016-2017 appearing in 10 games.

After college, Calhoun drew attention from five professional teams, including three in the National Football League. In 2018 the Paducah, KY native signed as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans. That same year he also was in camp with the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins.

In 2019 he signed contracts with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football. Most recently Calhoun was in the draft pool for the XFL which will begin play next year.

Calhoun can’t wait to start the next chapter in his career.

“I feel like it’s a great opportunity to go out and play some football on a good team. I talked with Jawad (Pirates Owner and General Manager Jawad Yatim) about how things are up there, and it seems like a nice community with a strong fan base, so I’m excited to get up there,” Calhoun said.

Jawad Yatim, Pirates President and General manager sees great potential in Calhoun.
“From what I’ve seen on film, Kendall has real good balance, coordination, and athleticism for a player of his stature. He’s extremely long and has tremendous upside in my opinion. He’s still only 24. After watching his game film against Michigan, I thought he did a great job in neutralizing one of the top pass rushers in the country in Chase Winovich: that was a great depiction of the type of potential he has. I’m definitely glad to have Kendall under contract and look forward to seeing him in March when training camp kicks off, Yatim said.

The lineman, who now makes his home in Germantown, Maryland (forty minutes outside of Washington, DC) also improved his football study habits during his time in NFL camps.

“That’s where I learned how to be a professional and a student of the game. I studied for hours and hours trying to learn an offense and once I fully understood why plays happen the way they do, and I could anticipate things going into practice, I was like, wow, it was this easy the whole time? It’s a learning thing,” Calhoun said.

This will be Calhoun’s first venture into arena football, but he feels he’ll adjust quickly.

“I’ll just have to be aware of my surroundings more because I know there are only three linemen, so I won’t overcompensate and do my best to keep the quarterback upright. Playing indoors will be something new for me, so I’m excited to see how it is, meet some new teammates and get this thing rolling,” he added.

The Massachusetts Pirates are members of the National Arena League (NAL). The Pirates play all home games at the DCU Center located at 50 Forster St. Worcester, MA, 01608. Pirates season tickets for the 2020 season are now available starting at $99.00.
