Pirates Re-sign DL Da’Sean Downey – Presented by Phoenix Communications, Inc.

WORCESTER, MA – The Massachusetts Pirates, Champions of the Indoor Football League, have re-signed defensive lineman Da’Sean Downey for its title defense in 2022. Downey set three records for the Pirates enroute to the championship in 2021.

Downey was a key part of the Massachusetts defense that allowed a league low of 31.6 points per game and was number one against the run yielding 3.1 yards per carry. Opposing quarterbacks were also held to IFL lows of 4.8 yards per completion and a completion percentage of 48.8 over 17 games.

In eight regular season contests, the former University of Massachusetts star had seven solo tackles and 19 assists for a total of 26 stops. He also had seven tackles for a loss, four sacks, broke up one pass and forced two fumbles. His breakout game was vs. the Frisco Fighters when he notched three solo tackles and added four assists along with 1.5 stops for a loss for two yards and 1.5 sacks.

Downey, 6’4” 225 lbs., set a single game record in Massachusetts’ 68-44 regular season win over the Arizona Rattlers at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center. In the victory, Downey became the only Pirate to force two fumbles in a game.

His knack for making team history continued in the postseason as he set a record for most tackles for a loss in a playoff game with three in the Pirates 43-22 victory over the Frisco Fighters enabling Massachusetts to advance to the United Bowl. In the championship game, Downey established Massachusetts’ All-Time postseason mark of 4.5 tackles for a loss as he posted another 1.5 TFL in the Pirates’ 37-34 overtime win over Arizona.

Downey began his pro career in 2018 as he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens. In 2019 he played in six games for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League recording four tackles with one sack. That same year he appeared in nine games for the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football posting six tackles, 3.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, forced one fumble and recovered another.

During his time at UMass, the White Plains, NY native took the field in 42 games, made 184 tackles, had 34 tackles for a loss, recorded 12 sacks, one interception, defended six passes and forced four fumbles. Downey was a First-Team All ECAC selection after his senior season in 2017 as he amassed 58 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss and six sacks in 11 games.
