WORCESTER, MA – The Massachusetts Pirates, Champions of the Indoor Football League, have hired Mike Custer to be their Offensive Line Coach and Special Teams Assistant for the 2022 season. Custer last coached with the Louisville Xtreme this past season.

The move reunites Custer with Massachusetts Offensive Coordinator Mark Stoute. Not only did Custer work with Stoute who was the Head Coach in Louisville, but the two have a history that dates back to the 1980’s when they played semi-professional football in Connecticut.

Pirates Co-owner, President and General Manager Jawad Yatim is counting on the Custer-Stoute combination to produce positive results.

“Coach Custer brings a vast amount of experience in the indoor game to our staff.,” Yatim said. “He has great chemistry with our offensive coordinator Coach Stoute who he’s worked alongside for many years. He knows coaches terminology and understands his playbook which will allow for a smoother transition as we go into the season with a new play caller on the offensive side. We’re glad to have him on board,” Yatim added.

After playing college football at the University of Buffalo, Custer then played professionally and then went on to coaching at the high school level, collegiately, and eventually in the arena and indoor football leagues.

Prior to coaching with Stoute in Louisville, Custer served as an Assistant Head Coach with Stoute in 2019 with Cedar Rapids in the IFL. That was their second time around in Cedar Rapids. The pair worked together with the Titans for four seasons from 2013 through 2016, helping the team to four-straight playoff appearances and a record of 40 – 17.

Other stops for Custer include working with the Seattle Timberwolves in 2011 as an Assistant Coach, Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Coach. Later in 2017, Custer coached with the Iowa Barnstormers and was a part of the staff during Iowa’s 2018 IFL Championship season.
