WORCESTER, MA – The Massachusetts Pirates, Champions of the Indoor Football League, have obtained the restricted free agent rights to defensive back Dominick Sanders in a trade with the Spokane Shock in return for future considerations.

This is the second time that the Pirates have held Sanders’ rights. Massachusetts signed Sanders for the 2020 season that was lost due to the pandemic.

In 12 games with Spokane last season, the former standout defensive back at the University of Georgia had 38 tackles (26 solo), one tackle for a loss, three interceptions, and broke up ten passes while forcing one fumble and recovering another.

The Pirates know all too well of Sanders’ skill level as two of his three interceptions were against Massachusetts. The first was a 29-yard pick six of a Sean Brackett pass in the Shock’s 34-26 win over the Pirates. His second was an interception of Alejandro Bennifield toss that he returned for 41 yards. The Pirates won that game in double-overtime 63-57.

In 2019 Sanders played in five games with the Columbus Lions of the National Arena League. That season he had 13 solo tackles and assisted on three others for a total of 14.5 He had one tackle for a loss and intercepted three passes including one against Massachusetts. He also broke up four passes.

The 6’0” 200 lb. DB from Tucker, GA played four seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs and set a school record starting in 54 games (most by a non-kicker). Sanders tied the school’s all-time record with 16 interceptions. His 381 interception return yards were the most in school history. He notched 156 tackles during his time in Athens with 11.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks.

In 2018 Sanders signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles and later with the Dallas Cowboys that same season.
