WORCESTER, MA – Defensive Back Khalid Wooten has re-signed with the Massachusetts Pirates for the 2022 season. By returning to the Champions of the Indoor Football League, Wooten will become the first defensive back to play in every season with the Pirates.
This past year, the 5”11” 200 lb. DB from San Bernardino, CA, was a key member of the Massachusetts defense that was number one against the pass. Opposing quarterbacks completed a league low of 48.6 percent of their passes while gaining just 117.3 yards per game and 4.8 yards per reception.
Wooten was a starter for the Pirates in the 37-34 overtime victory over the Arizona Rattlers in the United Bowl, making one of the biggest plays in Pirates’ history. On the Rattlers first possession in OT, on second and goal from the two yard line, Wooten forced Arizona quarterback Drew Powell to fumble into the endzone where it was recovered by Aarion Maxey-Penton to set up the Pirates game winning drive.
Other 2021 highlights included Wooten’s fumble recovery, two pass break ups and three tackles in the Pirates 43-22 semifinal win over the Frisco Fighters, his four passes broken up in a 55-19 win over the Iowa Barnstormers and his dramatic break up of a fourth down pass from Frisco’s Jonathan Bane to Manny Arceneaux with 2:51 to play in a July 3rd game in Texas. That play enabled the Pirates to win the game on a Josh Gable 27-yard field goal as time expired, 38-37, handing the Fighters its first ever loss in the IFL.
On the season Wooten had 45 tackles, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He ranked fourth in the IFL with 16 passes broken up and was fifth in passes defended.
Wooten played his college ball at the University of Nevada and was a sixth-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2013 NFL Draft and appeared in three games. In 2016 he played in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes; saw action with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2017 and was acquired by the Toronto Argonauts later that same season.
