Pirates Re-sign United Bowl MVP – Presented by Phoenix Communications, Inc.

WORCESTER, MA – Quarterback Alejandro Bennifield, the Most Valuable Player in the 2021 United Bowl, will return to the Indoor Football League Champion Massachusetts Pirates for the 2022 season. Bennifield earned MVP honors with his performance against the Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix in the 37-34 overtime victory that gave the Pirates their first ever championship. In that game, Bennifield was 10 of 23 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions. He also ran ten times for 56 yards and scored two touchdowns.
2021 was a magical season for the 6’2” 210 lb. lefty from Lovejoy, GA. He started the season as a backup, but relieved the injured Sean Brackett in the first game of the season against Louisville throwing three touchdown passes and running for another score in a 49-18 win. He remained the starter the rest of the season. In 16 games Bennifield was third in the IFL completing 169 passes. His 309 attempts were second most in the league. He ranked fourth completing 55 percent of his throws. He finished second with 43 touchdowns, 1,972 yards, ten interceptions and ranked third with an efficiency rating of 147.8.
In week two Bennifield was named the IFL’s Offensive Player of the Week in a 40-36 loss at Green Bay. It was hard to overlook his 16 of 27 passing performance for 139 yards and a touchdown. He also ran five times for 28 yards; finding the endzone four times, a Pirates’ single game record for most rushing touchdowns.
Bennifield’s best performance came on July 10 in a home game vs. Bismarck. Against the Bucks, Bennifield threw for a season high 214 yards and five touchdowns going 12 of 20 in the 43-38 victory. He also ran six times for 13 yards and a touchdown. He also accounted for six touchdowns the following week in a 68-44 home victory over Arizona with four passing scores and two rushing.
Bennifeld’s most clutch rushing touchdown of the season came on the final play of a double overtime win in Spokane against the Shock. His ten-yard scamper gave the Pirates a 63-57 victory.
In the Pirates playoff opener against Bismarck, Bennifield completed a season best 73.3 percent of his passes in a 44-19 win on Phoenix Field at the DCU Center. The former Tennessee Chattanooga QB was 11 of 15 for 113 yards and two touchdowns. He also had seven carries for 26 yards and a TD.
When the season was over, Bennifield had a record of 12-3 as a starter, led the Pirates to its best season ever with a 14-3 overall record and established a current 11-game winning streak, which is also a franchise best. His 19 rushing touchdowns set a Massachusetts record and ranked him fifth in the IFL. His 116 points saw him finish ninth in the league in scoring. He was also fourth in total offense with 2,258 yards for an average of 141.1 yards per game.
