WORCESTER, MA – The Indoor Football League has named Massachusetts Pirates linebacker Martrell Spaight as the IFL Defensive Player of the Week following a first round 44-19 playoff win over the Bismarck Bucks at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center last Saturday night.

Spaight, (6’-3” 235 lbs.) a fifth-round selection by the Washington Football Team in 2015 (141st overall), had 3.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss for seven yards and recorded the games’ only sack in the victory.

The Pirates defense held Bismarck to just 61 yards rushing, and 57 yards passing for 118 yards of total offense. The 19 points allowed marked the fifth time this year that the Massachusetts defense held opponents under 20 points.

This season in eight games Spaight made 27 solo tackles and assisted on 23 more for a total of 50. He had 9.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. He also broke up five passes, had a quarterback hurry, blocked two kicks and recovered a fumble for a touchdown in a 63-57 overtime win against the Spokane Shock on the road.

The former Arkansas Razorback and North Little Rock native led SEC in tackles 2014 with 128, was First Team All-SEC and was selected to play in the 2015 Senior Bowl. Spaight went on to play in 37 NFL games with Washington, Miami and Jacksonville recording 107 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
