WORCESTER, MA – Massachusetts Pirates defensive back Santos Ramirez has been named the Indoor Football League’s Defensive Player of the Week for his stellar play in the Pirates 63-57 overtime victory over the Spokane Shock saturday night in Washington at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

Ramirez, who saw action in five games with the Seattle Dragons in the XFL last season, currently leads the Pirates with 62 tackles. He had seven against Spokane, one of which was for a loss of two yards, but it was his involvement in three turnovers that directly led to three scores that were most impressive.

In the first quarter with the game tied at three, the Shock had the ball first and ten on their own 14. Ramirez hit running back Kamerin Solomon forcing a fumble that rolled into the end zone where Martrell Spaight recovered it for a touchdown giving the Pirates their first lead in the game.

The 6’2” 207 lb. the former captain of the Arkansas Razorbacks intercepted Shock quarterback Marcus McDade in the fourth quarter which led to a 25-yard field goal by Ali Mourtada, giving Massachusetts a 50-27 lead with 6:54 remaining. His last play however, was the most important as the Shock tied the game sending the Pirates into their first ever overtime game in the IFL.

After each team scored in the first OT session, Spokane had a third down with the ball at the Pirates one-yard line and was poised to take the lead. The center snap never got to McDade as it was jarred loose by JD Griggs and Ramirez recovered the fumble to end the threat. Three plays later Pirates quarterback Alejandro Bennifield scored on a ten-yard run to end the game giving Massachusetts its eighth victory of the season.

The Pirates will look for their sixth straight win on Saturday night at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center when they host the Green Bay Blizzard at 7:05.
