Is The Pirates Offense Turning The Ship?

WORCESTER, MA- Since their 40-33 loss to the Frisco Fighters on June 12th, the Pirates have gone on a four game winning streak. During this current stretch, the Pirates have knocked off three of the IFL’s top five teams. Obviously a team on a four game winning streak is playing well, but just how good have the Pirates been during this stretch?
Throughout this 4 game stretch, Pirates quarterback Alejandro Bennifield has been nothing short of impressive. His statistics, as shown below, speak for themselves;
|Cmp||Yds||TD||INT||Rush YDS||Rush TDs|
Bennifield has accounted for 20 touchdowns in the last four games… 20. During this stretch Bennifield is averaging 168.5 passing yards per game, 3 passing touchdowns per game, and 1 rushing touchdown per game.
Bennifield’s receivers have also found some success of their own during this winning streak, Especially Thomas Owens and Laquvionte Gonzalez, as seen on the stat sheet.
|@ Tucson||5/ 56 /1||5/ 57/ 1|
|@ Frisco||6/ 72 /2||1/ 19 /1|
|Vs Bismarck||8/ 147/ 3||2/ 23 /1|
|Vs Arizona||4/ 42/ 1||3/ 48 /1|
|Totals||23/ 317/ 7||11/ 147/ 4|
11 of Bennifield’s 15 passing touchdowns in the last four games have gone to Owens or Gonzalez. The duo has also accounted for 68.84% of the teams receiving yards over this stretch. Their 34 combined catches accounts for 66.67% of total team receptions during this stretch.
All of the success from the play-makers wouldn’t be possible if not for the big guys up front. Over these last four games, Bennifield has only been sacked once. A pretty impressive feat considering three of the teams the Pirates have seen during this stretch rank top six in sacks.
As a team, the Pirates have averaged 46.5 points per game, and 218.25 yards per game. The Pirates have also been taking good care of the ball, as they have just 3 turnovers during this stretch.
I had a chance to catch up with Pirates quarterback Alejandro Bennifield following the Pirates 68-44 victory over the number one ranked Arizona Rattlers. When I asked what had gotten into the offense Bennifield responded “We’re just clicking right now. We have been preparing every single week, kinda gotten down on our film review and our execution, and now we’re just performing well”.
If this is the Pirates offense starting to click, it is a great time for it. The Pirates currently sit in third place in the IFL standings with just four games remaining in the regular season. As we near playoff time in August and September, the Pirates could make some real noise if they play the way they have the last few weeks.
The Pirates will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday on the road against the number three ranked Spokane Shock. A big game for the Pirates, as the Shock sit just one game behind them in the standings. Kickoff from Spokane Arena 10:05 PM EST.
