Mardy Gilyard – Wide Receiver
After a brief time away from the team, the Massachusetts Pirates have announced that “The Captain of the Ship,” Mardy Gilyard has re-signed with the team. A 6’1”, 190 lb. receiver, Gilyard previously spent two years with the Pirates, where he became the all-time leading receiver for the franchise, posting 153 receptions, 1,697 yards and 48 touchdowns.
Gilyard’s collegiate career at Cincinnati was filled with awards and national recognition. He was twice named to the All-American team, was a member of the 2008 and 2009 Big East First-teams, and was named the Big East Special Teams Player of the Year in consecutive years. In his senior season, the Cincinnati standout finished 9th overall in Heisman voting.
After school, Gilyard brought his talents to the NFL, he was drafted in the 4th round by the (then) St. Louis Rams. He played in 11 games his rookie year, primarily returning kicks, before spending time with the Jets, Eagles and Chiefs. In 2013, Gilyard transitioned from the NFL, logging time in the CFL, AFL, and NAL, where he eventually found his home with the Pirates.
In 2019, his second season with the Pirates, Gilyard was named to the 1st-Team All-NAL after a breakout year, producing 84 receptions, 950 receiving yards and 29 total touchdowns.
After a week which included parting ways with two receivers, the Pirates hope that Gilyard can boost their receiving corps and spark the special teams unit as they prepare to face off against the Louisville Xtreme this Saturday, June 5th at 7:30pm, at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center.
Josh Gable – Kicker
Along with Gilyard, the Pirates announced this week that they have signed 5’10”, 185 lb. kicker, Josh Gable. A former professional soccer player who spent time in both Italy and Belgium, Gable made the switch to kicking professionally in 2014, signing with the IFL’s Iowa Barnstormers.
Gable has since played an additional three seasons in the IFL, participated in three Spring Leagues, and was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad in 2019. Gable’s signing should bolster a special teams unit that has struggled throughout the first five weeks of the season and provide a level of stability to the kicking game with the help of a kicker with extensive IFL experience.
You can see the two new signings in action this Saturday against the Xtreme at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA at 7:30 p.m. EST.
