Alexis Johnson – DL

The Massachusetts Pirates continue to strengthen a defensive line that has been nothing short of dominant through the first four weeks of the IFL season with the signing of defensive lineman Alexis Johnson. Johnson is a 6’3”, 315 lb. product from the University of Tennessee and appeared in all 12 games his senior season with the Volunteers.

As a staple in the Volunteers 3-4 system, Johnson’s size, strength and hands were on display throughout his final season, posting 51 total tackles, 6 for a loss, 4 sacks and 2 interceptions. Johnson also completed a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Johnson’s diverse skill set and tenacity will complement a Pirates defense that is looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the Spokane Shock in their home opener.

Martez Carter – RB

In a move to build their offense, the Massachusetts Pirates have signed running back Martez Carter, a 5’7”, 210 lb. product out of Grambling State University. At GSU, Carter ran for 2,628 yards and 29 touchdowns in 48 games, helped GSU win back-to-back SWAC titles, and was a three-time All-SWAC selection.

Following his career at Grambling State, Carter signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2018. After spending training camp with the Redskins, Carter was released and later signed with the New Orleans Saints practice squad, before heading to the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL in 2020. In a COVID-shortened season, Carter appeared in 2 games for the Wildcats, including a Week Three performance in which he accounted for three touchdowns and 34 yards on the ground.

Turner will pair nicely out of the Pirates’ backfield with Week One IFL Player of the Week Justin Stockton, who has been carrying the load throughout the early weeks of the season.

RJ Turner – WR

The Massachusetts Pirates have made another addition to their receiving corps this week with the announcement of new singing R.J. Turner, a 6’2”, 215 lb wideout. Turner played four years for Louisiana-Monroe before transferring to Texas Tech University as a graduate student in 2019. At Tech, Turner provided a veteran spark, appearing in all 12 games, and leading the Red Raiders in receptions with 45, while posting 654 yards and three touchdowns. Turner was also named to the 2019 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 list.

As a shifty, quick receiver, Turner should add another element to an already dynamic Pirates offense in time for a Week 5 Match-up against the Louisville Xtreme. See Turner and the Massachusetts Pirates in action this Saturday against the Xtreme at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA at 7:05 p.m. EST.
