The Massachusetts Pirates strengthened their defensive line this week with the addition of former UMASS defensive lineman Da’Sean Downey. Speaking with masspirates.com, Downey expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Pirates.
“I’m just glad to be given another opportunity to play the game I love. Definitely appreciative of Jawad and the Pirates coaching staff for this chance and I’m just ready to do whatever I can to help the team win.”
During his time at UMASS, Downey (6’4”, 225 lbs) was twice named to the Phil Steele All-Independent Team, placed on the Ted Hendricks Award Watch List, and named to the All-ECAC First Team. In 2018, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, before spending time with the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL.
Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim highlighted that Downey will fill an important role on a defensive line that recently lost two players to the Spring League, and add to a defense that has been dominant through its first two games.
“We were put in a bind losing a couple of our defensive lineman recently, however, adding Da’Sean is going to bolster our defensive front which I feel like has been performing well up to this point. Glad to have aboard.”
Downey will take the field as the Pirates face the Bismarck Bucks this Saturday at 7:05 EST at the Bismarck Event Center.
