WORCESTER, MA. — Toby Johnson has been re-signed for the 2021 IFL Season. Johnson returns to the Massachusetts Pirates for his second season after finishing second on the team in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (8.5) in 2019. “I feel good coming back. I told people in my press conference last time that I had unfinished business with the Pirates and if I didn’t sign with an NFL team I would come back. I want to be a winner once in my lifetime and we have the team to do it.”

Pirates president and general manager Jawad Yatim is elated to announce the signing of Johnson with the Pirates season opener less than three weeks away.

“Toby is one of our leaders, in my opinion he’s a very polished player, always looking to get better and find ways to improve. Productive, and we are definitely a better organization when Toby Johnson is a part of it. Glad to have him aboard and look forward to getting kicked off here pretty shortly.”

After a spectacular 2019 season with the Pirates, Johnson took his talents outdoors and played for the XFL’s New York Guardians in 2020, where he recorded 11 tackles, 2 passes defended, and an interception. In August 2020, Johnson was invited to work out for the Buffalo Bills.

Prior to playing with the Pirates, Johnson spent time in several NFL organizations, including the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions. In 2016, Johnson played in two NFL games with the Vikings and recorded 2 tackles and 1 QB hit.

Before declaring for the 2015 NFL Draft, Johnson played his junior and senior college football seasons at the University of Georgia. He appeared in 23 games for the Bulldogs and compiled 87 combined tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. Johnson played in two bowl games for the Bulldogs. He spent his first two college seasons at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Johnson is a native of Moorhead, Mississippi.
