WORCESTER, MA. — A former standout Big Ten running back is joining the Massachusetts Pirates for the 2021 IFL season. Akrum Wadley (5’11”, 190 lbs.) starred at the University of Iowa and was voted All-Big Ten Third-Team by conference coaches in 2016 and 2017. He comes to the Pirates hungry for more.

“I feel I can bring explosiveness and knowledge to the table,” Wadley told masspiratesfootball.com.

Wadley rushed 16 times in the 2018 NFL preseason for 56 yards.

When asked how he will adapt to the indoor game for the first time, Wadley says he is a fast learner and is ready for the challenge.

“I can pick things up quickly. I feel ready. I’ve been waiting a while to play again.”

Wadley’s most previous professional football stint came in the XFL with the Houston Roughnecks in 2020, when he participated in the Roughnecks mini camp before the season. Prior to that, he spent time in the AAF with the Atlanta Legends in 2019 and in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans. Wadley joined the Titans in May 2018 as an undrafted free agent. Before being released, he was amongst the final roster cuts at the end of the 2018 preseason.

Wadley, a native of Newark, New Jersey, played college football at the University of Iowa from 2014-2017. As a freshman and sophomore, he appeared in 17 games, gaining 682 rushing yards and 8 rushing scores. In his final two seasons in college, Wadley upped his performance in a big way by appearing in all 26 games and rushing for 2,190 yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished his college career as just the fourth running back in Iowa history to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.

In his final collegiate game, Wadley was named MVP of the 2017 Pinstripe Bowl in a 27-20 victory over Boston College. Wadley participated in the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl following his college career.

Pirates president and general manager Jawad Yatim feels Wadley can be a threat on both offense and special teams.

“Akrum had a very productive college career at Iowa. On film you see he’s nimble-footed, is great in the open field, and is certainly capable in the passing game. Can help us on special teams as well, glad to have him.”
