WORCESTER, MA. — The Massachusetts Pirates have signed wide receiver Laquvionte Gonzalez (5’10”, 185 lbs). Gonzalez is excited to sign with the Pirates and feels his speed is his best asset.
“My high school coach always told me, ‘You can’t teach speed.’”
Before joining the Pirates, Gonzalez declared for the 2018 NFL Draft and went undrafted. Days later, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent. He was then waived by the Rams in July 2018.
Gonzalez then signed on with the AAF’s San Diego Fleet for the 2018 season. He also had stops in Champions Indoor Football (2019) and The Spring League (2020).
Pirates president and general manager Jawad Yatim feels Gonzalez can be a factor on special teams, in addition to on offense.
“The defense is going to have to account for his speed, he has a different gear and can also be dangerous for us in the return game,” Yatim told masspiratesfootball.com. “It’ll be exciting to see this kid in hi-motion, glad to have him aboard.”
Gonzalez played college football for three different schools from 2013-2017. He started his college career at Texas A&M University, where he spent his freshman and sophomore years. He then transferred to the University of Kansas for his junior year. He was awarded 2016 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for Offensive Newcomer of the Year that season.
As a senior at Southeastern, Gonzalez broke nearly every single-season record for a wide receiver in school history by becoming the all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, receiving yards per game and receiving touchdowns. He became the first player in Southeastern history to be named an AFCA-NAIA All-American as well.
Gonzalez becomes the fourth wide receiver the Pirates have added to their roster for the 2021 season. He is a native of Cedar Hill, Texas.
