This week, I had the chance to chat with Massachusetts Pirates fan Sam Blotner about his love for the team and a wide variety of other topics.

Blotner, a native of Carver, MA, first fell in love with the Pirates in the 2018 before the organization’s inaugural season. When asked what drew him to the Pirates, Blotner said it was due to his love of arena football.

“I’ve always wanted to root for an arena team here in Massachusetts. When I heard there was a team on the way, I became a fan instantly.”

When asked about his favorite aspects of a Pirates gameday, Blotner shared multiple facets that make him excited.

“I like going to the games, going onto the field, and meeting the players. Even though I haven’t had the chance to see him play yet, my favorite player is wide receiver Darren Carrington. I can’t wait to watch him make his Pirates debut.”

The Pirates, as a whole, have put together countless thrilling moments in the team’s short history. Yet, the most exciting moment in Blotner’s view came during the Pirates’ first season. On July 21st, 2018, the Pirates hosted the Carolina Cobras. Down by three points, the Pirates pulled off a miracle as they found the back of the endzone as the clock expired.

When asked why this was his favorite moment, Blotner specified a few reasons.

“It was a really high scoring game. There was a game-winner and the Pirates finally beat the Cobras.”

A typical Pirates game day for Blotner involves him arriving at the DCU Center, the Pirates home venue, an hour before kickoff. Before the game gets underway, he ventures over to concessions to grab some food.

“My go-to at the concession stand are chicken tenders. I order them almost every game.”

When Blotner is not at the DCU Center cheering on the Pirates, he cheers on other local teams including the Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics. As the Pirates prepare to enter their first season in the Indoor Football League, Blotner ‘couldn’t be happier’. When asked what a successful Pirates season would look like, Blotner didn’t hold back and responded with high expectations.

“The Pirates first need to get to the playoffs and a championship would be ideal. To go into the IFL and win our first year would be really cool.”

With the 2021 season just a couple months away, the Pirates are inching closer to getting their third season started on the turf. Sam Blotner and the rest of Pirates Nation are feeling ecstatic for what’s next!
