WORCESTER, MA. — The Massachusetts Pirates have announced the signing of offensive lineman Marquis Lucas for the 2021 season. Lucas (6’4”, 310 lbs.) last played in the XFL for the Tampa Bay Vipers in 2020, where he made two starts in five games. Lucas also played for the AAF’s Orlando Apollos in 2019.

The addition of Lucas has Pirates president and general manager Jawad Yatim feeling confident about the team’s offensive line heading into the upcoming season.

Lucas’ NFL experience started with the Buffalo Bills in 2016, when he signed with the organization as an undrafted free agent.

“Marquis checks off all the boxes we have in regards to a player we are looking to sign, he’s enthusiastic for the opportunity and we are glad to have him aboard. This signing also provides us some pre-camp continuity and chemistry along our offensive front that we wouldn’t have otherwise with Marquis and Jordan McCray having played together the past couple seasons in Orlando and Tampa. We feel good about where we are at in regards to the offensive line position.”

Lucas has spent time with four NFL organizations. His NFL experience started with the Buffalo Bills in April 2016, when he signed as an undrafted free agent. Lucas participated in the Bills’ training camp before being released in September 2016.

His next stop in the NFL came later that year with the Minnesota Vikings. He was signed to the Vikings practice squad in December 2016 and was ultimately released in May 2017. Lucas then signed with the Atlanta Falcons in June 2017. He was then waived by the Falcons during training camp in August 2017.

A day following his release from the Falcons, Lucas was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Lucas was eventually moved to the Buccaneers practice squad in September 2017 before being released in October 2017.

Lucas played college football at West Virginia University. He spent five years there, including his redshirt freshman year in 2011, and started 26 combined games in his junior and senior seasons. Following his days as a Mountaineer, Lucas participated in the 2016 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. He is a native of Miami, Florida.
