As the Massachusetts Pirates get ready to start the 2021 season, we would like to spotlight a very special season ticket holder and learn more about her Pirates fandom and how it started. The following is an interview with Barbara Gray. She is a huge Pirates fan and was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. Barbara attends Pirates games with her Aunt Robyn and Uncle Michael.
RB: How long have you been a Pirates fan for?
BG: I have been a Pirates fan for a couple of years and started going to the games in 2019.
RB: How did you become a Pirates fan?
BG: The team was holding a Christmas special event that myself, my Aunt Robyn, and Uncle Michael attended, and we started talking to the guys and fell in love with the team.
RB: How did you become a season ticket holder?
BG: Well, we all wanted to go to games during the first year in 2018, but we had a conflict that came up. Ultimately, in 2019 we became season ticket holders because we loved all the perks that came with it and we love going to see the Pirates play.
RB: Are there any memorable or funny experiences that you have had at a Pirates game?
BG: I do not have a favorite memory at a game. However, my favorite Pirates memory is when I went to one of their breakfast meets and greets on my birthday and my uncle got the entire team to sing happy birthday to me.
RB: Who is your favorite Pirates player?
BG: I like all the players since there are so many to choose from. However, if I had to pick one it would have to be Chucky Williams.
RB: What is your favorite part about being a Pirates season ticket holder?
BG: I love having all of the perks like getting specialty jerseys, having lanyards where you can store your game ticket and you do not have to carry it around, getting a discount to the team store, and being able to go to different team events that are only available to season ticket holders.
RB: What are you excited to see this season that you might have not experienced in 2019?
BG: I’m looking forward to all the theme nights. I was really excited about experiencing all the theme nights in 2020, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. I’m also looking forward to seeing all the players again.
RB: How have you been enjoying your time away from Pirates games with your aunt and uncle?
BG: We’re all trying to keep sane while staying inside and everything. My uncle and I like to play a lot of different phone and laptop games together.
