WORCESTER, MA. — The Massachusetts Pirates have announced the signing of defensive back Aarion Penton. At 5’10”, 190 pounds, Penton feels blessed to join the Pirates as they transition to a new league.
“It’s a blessing to be able to play football again,” Penton told MassPiratesFootball.com. “I’ll be new to Massachusetts and I’m excited to enter a new atmosphere.”
Penton believes he can be a great addition to the secondary and bring great production beginning in training camp. He joins Al Louis-Jean, Khalid Wooten and Santos Ramirez as confirmed members of the Massachusetts’ secondary for next season.
Pirates President and General Manger Jawad Yatim has been intrigued by Penton’s skillset for some time and is excited to have him signed. “I’ve been in contact with Aarion the last couple of years and glad we were able to get him on board for this upcoming season. He plays with enthusiasm, has produced at a high level and I believe he’ll be a contributor in our secondary this upcoming season. Looking forward to having him get to work with Coach Kizer and the rest of our staff as we prepare to compete for a championship in 2021.”
Speaking of Coach Kizer, the Pirates Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach sees Penton fitting right into the team’s defensive schemes. “Aarion is a very humble kid. Very competitive, great all-around athlete with great ball skills. We are expecting great things from Aarion next season to be a big part of our defense.”
Penton last played professionally in 2019 for the Generals of The Spring League. Prior to that, he spent time in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in 2019 and the Ottawa Redblacks in 2018. He was signed by the Los Angeles Rams in April 2017 as an undrafted free agent and was released by the Rams in September that same year.
A member of 2016’s All-SEC first team at Missouri, Penton also led the conference in interceptions that year as a senior. He appeared in 51 games, including two bowl games, during his collegiate career and finished tied for the seventh-most interceptions in school history. Following his time with the Tigers, he was selected to the East-West Shrine Game and was a Reese’s Senior Bowl participant.
