WORCESTER, MA. — The Pirates added a new piece to their secondary on Friday, as the team announced the signing of defensive back Santos Ramirez. A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Ramirez (6’2”, 207 lbs.) last played for the Seattle Dragons in the XFL earlier this year. The 24-year-old believes he can truly make a difference with the Pirates.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity to play the game I love again. I’m a fierce competitor that plays with a lot of passion and energy and have great range at safety. I expect to come in and make plays right away helping the Pirates get to the ‘ship!”
Ramirez played in all five Dragons games before the 2020 XFL Season was cancelled in March. He recorded 11 tackles. Before that, Ramirez signed with the NFL’s New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in May 2019. He was with the team for three months before being cut at the end of August.
Ramirez played college football at the University of Arkansas from 2015-18. After starting 3 games as a redshirt freshman and 7 games as a sophomore, Ramirez was voted team captain for his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, he was voted preseason All-SEC Third Team honors by conference coaches. Ramirez finished his college career with 228 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries.
Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim is excited to add Ramirez to the team’s defensive unit. “From the conversations I’ve had with Santos, he’s been nothing but great to speak with. Respectful and motivated, I could quickly get a sense of why he was a two-time captain down at Arkansas. Possesses great size but can also move really well, a physical and willing tackler, plays with high effort and passion, we think he’ll be a productive player for us. Glad to have on board.”
Defensive Coordinator Rayshaun Kizer believes Ramirez has the tools to become a great indoor player. “I like what I see out of Santos. Great athlete, length, size and leadership skills. Looking forward to seeing how he adapts to the indoor game. He definitely has the potential to be a great player in the league.”
