Where Are They Now: Sam Montgomery
By: Sam Gordon
Defensive lineman Sam Montgomery did what President and general manager Jawad Yatim loves to see. Move up.
The LSU alum was one of the many Pirates to be selected to the XFL draft pool where he was drafted by the DC Defenders.
“Football has been a really good venture for me so far,” Montgomery told masspiratesfootball.com. “It’s brought me to many different places and it’s brought me in touch with all kinds of people who I still keep in contact with.”
Montgomery took to the XFL immediately and enjoyed his time playing outdoor ball once again.
“The environment was really good and it was really nicely put together,” Montgomery said. “We had some really great caliber coaches and a lot of guys that you can tell really enjoyed the game. So it was something that was really the full experience of professional football. So it was one of the things that I knew that people really enjoyed the process and just the whole preliminary thing.”
Unfortunately, with the folding of the XFL, Montgomery has found himself out of football prematurely for now. That has not stopped him from preparing for when he hangs up the pads.
“Right now I’m just taking this time to pursue some more education,” Montgomery said. “Just getting things all sorted out so when the time comes to go back to football, we don’t have to worry about that going forward.”
Montgomery who is close to finishing up his degree, is all doing all he can to give back to others including the youth.
“I’m just really trying to maximize giving back to the community in ways that can help,” Montgomery said. “Doing a couple different things with just interactions and meeting people and trying to get involved in the district with events and sponsorships. It’s been a pretty unique process to educate people and take that same communication that I had learned in football and use it in the real world. It’s a blessing.”
