The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester, MA have signed former Wisconsin defensive back Lubern Figaro.  Figaro, 6’-1” 180lbs. from nearby Everett, MA played four seasons for the Badgers from 2014 through 2017 were he lettered each season.

In 50 games Figaro totaled 59 tackles in his career with nine passes broken up and one interception. Starting as a true freshman at safety, he was a part of Badger teams that won four consecutive bowl games. He also saw time a cornerback as the team went 45-10 during his time in Madison.

This year Figaro signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns and most recently was in camp with the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football.  Now Figaro can’t wait to be playing close to home.

“This is going to be amazing for me. To be able to play close to home is the best feeling in the world. I want to bring a championship to the area. My family will be able to see me play and that’s one of the most important things. I’m really excited to play for the Pirates,” he said.

When Pirates fans watch Figaro they will notice his 4.4 speed and has a physical style of play.

“I’m an aggressive corner. I can play corner, safety or nickel. I’m able to cover one on one and tackle in space,” he added.

Jawad Yatim, President of the Pirates, hopes the player from the Big 10 will pay big dividends.

"Lubern is another great signing for us in my opinion. He has a great pedigree, has been entrenched in a winning environment throughout his entire high school and college career, so he's another "winner" that we are bringing into our organization. He's a part of the winningest senior class in The University of Wisconsin's football history. He has a ton of experience and versatility playing in fifty games throughout his four year career, moving around between corner and safety. He was a part of a defensive unit at Wisconsin that ranked second nationally in points per game, and pass efficiency defense, and third ranked total defense during his four year tenure in Madison. He has a great combination of size, power and speed for a defensive back being listed at 6'1, 180 lbs. putting up 19 reps of 225 and running a 4.42 (40 yd. dash) during his pro day this past march. He's comfortable in man to man coverage, has good instincts, is a sound tackler, physical, and still very young. DB's in our league are going to give up receptions, that's just the way the game is designed, but if you can limit missed tackles and yards after the catch you will more than likely give yourself a great chance to win the game. I feel like Lubern can be a dependable asset for us in our secondary and he'll be a guy we can move around and play in different spots on the field as he has experience doing such. He's also a local player for us too which is always a bonus and we know he'll be excited to represent his home state the right way. We look forward to having Lubern in a Pirates uniform this spring," Yatim said.

This will be Figaro’s first venture into arena football but feels he’ll be able to make the necessary adjustments.  If he needs a hand he knows he can rely on one of his former teammates from Everett High School. Pirates defensive back Manny Asprilla.

“I’ll have a guy like Manny Asprilla to help me out. He’s been around and he’ll be a great teacher for me. I know Manny pretty well. He was a senior when I was a freshman in high school. I use to go and watch him play when I was growing up,” Figaro said.

Now Figaro will bring his skills and a winning culture from Wisconsin to Worcester.

“At Wisconsin, there we had a mentality that we had to win out. The guys in the locker room stuck together. We relied on each other. We always had each other’s back and picked each other up. It was great. For us to win ten games a season every single year was amazing.

I can understand the speed of the game being able to play in the Big 10 and playing with bigger guys. Playing at Wisconsin you have to be smart and being around intelligent coaches helped me out a lot,” he said.
