The Massachusetts Pirates professional arena football team in Worcester has signed wide receiver Tavares Martin Jr. The 6’1” 177 lb. Belle Glade, FL native played three seasons at Washington State University from 2015-2017 where he had 150 receptions for 1,683 yards and 17 touchdowns in 36 games. Martin Jr. likes what he sees when looking at the Pirates.
“It is a great opportunity to play ball. I was looking at a couple of games on line. I did some research and I saw they had two receivers with over one thousand yards and over 20 touchdowns and I figured if I am going to play in an arena league, why not play where they throw the ball a lot? It’s a great opportunity for me,” he said.
Massachusetts Pirates General Manager and Director Player Personnel Jawad Yatim was impressed with Martin Jr.’s credentials.
"What immediately stuck out to me was his production over a three year span which saw Tavares accumulate 2,382 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns. He made an impact immediately as a freshman as their primary kick returner and was cumulatively their most productive receiver over the next two seasons. He's a play maker, has fantastic hand eye coordination, great route-runner, has dependable hands and makes people miss in the open field. His game speed is a lot faster than any 40-time might indicate, you can see that on film. I think he's an important addition for us and we are looking forward to having him on board," Yatim said.
Martin Jr. played in 12 games for the Cougars as a true freshman as a wide out and kick returner where he averaged just over 22 yards per return. He established himself as a starter as a sophomore. In 13 games he was sixth in the Pac-12 in receiving with 64 receptions, seventh with seven touchdowns and eighth with 728 receiving yards averaging 11.4 yards per catch. He finished the 2017 season with 70 receptions and led the team with 831 yards receiving and nine touchdowns.
When asked what he can contribute to the Pirates, Martin Jr. said he’ll give everything that he has.
“What I bring to a team is sure hands and a unique style. My style is me. You’re going to get Tavares, every bit from the beginning of the game to the end of the game, every game, day in and day out. Great routes, great hands, ball skills and the ability to make plays after the catch,” he added.
This will be his first venture into arena football but it won’t change his approach to the game.
“I just want to go out and play my game and give the Pirates a different style that they need and that the fans aren’t used to seeing, just come in, contribute to the team and help them win a championship,” Martin Jr. said.
When asked if he could return kicks Martin Jr. said, “Why not. If it means me helping the team get the best field position I’m all for it.”
