Eight Pirates Capture Post Season Honors

The Massachusetts Pirates had eight players who were selected for the National Arena League’s 2018 All-NAL offensive and defensive teams.  Two members of the Pirates were first team offensive selections while two more grabbed second team honors.  The defense was also represent with four Pirates with two being named to the NAL’s first team.

54 receptions for 1,024 yards and 24 touchdowns helped to make Devonn Brown an All-First Team selection.  The wide receiver led the league averaging 19 yards per catch. He was also fourth in receiving yards and touchdown receptions.  The 5-9, 165 Lb. speedster’s best game of the season came in week two in a win over Jacksonville where he had six receptions for 166 yards and four touchdowns.

The Long Beach, California native also carried the ball six times for nine yards and a score.  He recorded the only “UNO” on special teams for the Pirates tallied 151 points on the season. He was tied for fifth in the NAL with 25 total touchdowns.

Offensive lineman Cornelius Lewis was an All-First Team selection.  At 6-4, 305 lbs. Lewis anchored an offensive line that helped the Pirates establish themselves as the number one passing team in the league averaging 229.8 yards per game. A product of Tennessee State University, Lewis was part of an offensive line that allowed just 11 sacks on the season, the fewest in the NAL.  Lewis had one rush for four yards and one reception for 17 yards that went for a touchdown.

Quarterback Sean Brackett was an offensive second team selection. Brackett, 6-1, 205 from Brooklyn, CT, led the NAL in total offense with 234.4 yards per game, 7.4 yards per play, 226.4 passing yards per game and 7.6 yards per passing attempt. His signature game was an eight touchdown performance against Carolina. On the season Brackett completed 259 of 419 passes (61.8 %) for 3,170 yards, 74 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.  He also ran 25 times for 111 yards, scored four touchdowns and had a pair of two point conversions, including one in overtime at the DCU Center to secure a 44-43 win over Maine.

Offensive lineman Fred Ruff was also a second team offensive selection.  Ruff, 6-6, 340 lbs. from Philadelphia had one reception against Lehigh Valley for eight yards and a touchdown.

Defensive lineman JD Griggs and defensive back Kiante Northington were named to the first team All-NAL Defense.

Griggs, 6-5, 244 lbs. from Piscataway, NJ was third in the league with 8.5 sacks and fifth in the NAL with nine tackles for a loss. Griggs had 20.5 tackles on the season (12 solo, 17 assisted) and recorded eight passes broken up, five quarterback hurries and one forced fumble.

Northington led the NAL with 12 interceptions. He also was third in passes defended with 18 breakups to go along with his 12 picks.  At 5-9, 185 lbs. out of Eastern Kentucky, Northington was also eighth in the league with 63.5 tackles (55 solo, 17 assisted). The Louisville, KY native returned one interception for a TD, led the NAL with 132 interception return yards, forced one fumble and recovered two.

Landing second team defensive honors were linebacker Nick Haag and defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau.

Haag had 17 solo tackles and assisted on 31 for a total of 32.5. A product of Worcester, MA, Haag recorded eight tackles for a loss, which was eight best in the league. He also had five sacks and broke up five passes. Haag had two fumble recoveries, forced one fumble and had a quarterback hurry.

Hardy-Tuliau had six interceptions for 108 yards and returned two for touchdowns, leading the league in that department. Hardy-Tuliau, 6-1, 175 lbs. from Whittier, CA, had 44 solo tackles and assisted on 14 more for a total of 51 which ranked 15th in the NAL.  He also had 1.5 tackles for a loss, broke up ten passes and forced one fumble.
